Hello friends and customers!

by Ray Parden

Welcome to the Sign Shop Blog!  I have been in the sign business for over 30 years, so I’ve been there, done that with quite a few aspects of the trade.  When I first started in the trade a stick of charcoal,  a brush and a can of One-Shot paint were all you needed to get things done.  Things are different now, technology and the internet  has made us more efficient and productive, however personal service to my customers has always been very important to me and hopefully this blog will help answer some of your questions and provide useful information.

Custom Printed Hard Hats

We have been selling hard hat stickers/decals for many years now, in fact they are one of our best selling products.  Some companies, however prefer to have their logo printed directly on the hard hat and we are  happy to now offer that service.   We will also sell hard hats without printing if you desire, so you can apply our regular hardhat decals.  Take a look at our custom printed hard hats here - Safety Products.

Also, we will soon have custom printed safety vests, gloves, hats and shirts in our online catalog.  Call or write if you have any questions about these products.

Club Membership Decals

Recently I added a motorcycle club membership decal to our website.
We have several more motorcycle club decal designs that we are working on, but since we stay busy it’s kind of hard to find the time to get them online.  In fact we have designs for all sorts of club membership decals.

We have been selling our hunting club membership decals for years now and they have proved to be quite popular.  Quite a few clubs re-order them every year.  The hunting club decals are placed members vehicles windows so that the club can keep track of vehicles on the club property.  We even offer numbered decals.

So if your club needs a decal for any purpose, please don’t hesitate to contact us, we may have just what you are looking for and if not we can design and print your club decals to your specifications.

Promotional Products

As I have said before, I have been in the sign business for over 30 years.  During that time most of my sign business came from making custom signs for local folks.  About 10 years ago I started this website and began selling to a wider range of customers from all over the country.  Most of what we sell online are decals which we make,  and sign letters from Gemini, Inc.

There are, however, literally thousands of sign related products out there and my goal with my NEW Promotional Products Online Catalog is to make some of them available to my existing and future customers.   This catalog is separate from theSignShop.com, but as time progresses I plan to offer some of the items that I think my customers would like in this website as well.

If you want to check it out, I recommend using the search feature to narrow down the selection because there are over 300,000 items there.  The products there are all from different members of a trade organization that I belong to and not just a group of random vendors or a prepackaged get rich quick website scheme.  If it’s too overwhelming for you just send me a note telling me what you are looking for and I will get you a quote asap.

What kind of items will you find there?  Pretty much everything that you could possibly put your name or logo on, like cups, tee-shirts, hats, pens, rulers, umbrellas, usb drives, inflatables, awards, I even found a pair of giant panties (don’t ask me why I was looking for that).

Thanks again for stopping by…

Sign Letter Installation Videos

I just finished uploading several videos on Gemini Letter installations.  Hopefully this will help answer some of your questions about installing letters as you can actually see how it’s done.

One thing that I do differently from what the videos shows is -  I usually do not remove the drilling pattern after punching the hole locations.  There are times when you cannot find  a punch mark  if the pattern is removed, so I just leave it in place.

Should You Try Installing Metal or Plastic Sign Letters?

Should you try installing metal or plastic dimensional sign letters?  The quick answer is - yes if you are competent at basic carpentry skills like measuring and using a drill.   If the letters go up high on a wall should should consider whether or not you really want to attempt that challenge.   If the answer is no you could sub the work out to a handy man or carpenter and still have considerable savings over hiring a sign professional to do the work, but of course if your budget allows, hire the sign professional.

Most sign letter installations require using a paper pattern to show where the holes need to be drilled in the wall where the letters go.   Some of the smaller plastic letters can be installed with just an adhesive.  When installing with just adhesive a spacing tape is used instead of the drilling pattern.  The spacing tape is a strip of paper that is taped onto the wall which shows approximately how the letters are spaced on the wall.  It is up to the installer to align the letters plumb and straight, so this type of installation could be more risky if you don’t have a good eye for alignment.  It does help to have someone assisting with this by standing far enough back to see if the letters look straight before gluing them.

When using the drilling pattern to install letters the biggest challenge is sometimes getting the holes drilled in just the right spot.  Brick walls tend to be rough and sometimes their surface can cause your drill bit to try to wander off course.  You can try center punching the holes to create an indention to help keep your drill bit on track (wear safety glasses).  I always pay close attention to where the hole should be when drilling.  Sometimes you just can’t get the hole to start in exactly the right spot, but after you get the hole started a little you can angle the drill back in the right direction to correct for the slightly off start.  Also, the reality is you just need two holes to hold the letter straight, so if one is really badly off, just don’t use it, most letters have four holes.  I have also had success bending the threaded rods on the backs of the letters to force them to align properly.
